You’ve found the love of your life and the two of you are getting married! Now what? Your wedding is one of the most complex events you, your spouse-to-be and your families may ever orchestrate. A solid plan moves the process forward, reduces stress levels and gets your marriage off to a happy start.

 

12 MONTHS TO GO

  • Choose your date
  • Start a wedding planning binder or get a planning system
  • Interview wedding planners if you plan on using one
  • Discuss the budget with everyone who will be contributing
  • Narrow down and explore ceremony and reception sites—some venues may need even longer to reserve a space
  • Find your caterer, sign contract and pay deposit
  • Choose your officiant and discuss preparation and procedures
  • Choose your wedding party
  • Start your guest list
  • Begin wedding dress shopping using our guide on page 48.
  • Find the legal requirements for marriage licenses where you will wed and mark pertinent dates in your calendar/phone

 

9-6 MONTHS TO GO

  • Book photographer and videographer
  • Find your florist
  • Book ceremony musicians and/or reception band or DJ
  • Reserve party rental equipment
  • Shop for and order bridal accessories
  • Choose your bridesmaids’ dresses
  • Start your registry
  • Arrange cake tasting and order
  • Research honeymoon spots
  • Close in on final guest list
  • Mail save-the-dates, especially for destination or holiday weddings

 

6-4 MONTHS TO GO

  • Attend pre-wedding counseling, if required
  • Order wedding invitations, thank you notes, personal stationary, etc., as early as you can
  • Reserve rehearsal dinner location and caterer if needed. Sign contracts and pay deposit
  • Arrange accommodations for out-of-town guests
  • Select and order men’s formal wear; schedule fittings
  • Finalize décor
  • Reserve wedding day transportation
  • Plan and book your honeymoon
  • Complete your registry

 

4-2 MONTHS TO GO

  • Finish addressing invitations
  • Meet with caterer to finalize plans
  • Select and order wedding rings
  • Set hair and makeup consultations
  • Select gifts for attendants, parents and each other
  • Choose favors and guest book
  • Complete cake order
  • Book room for wedding night

 

8-4 WEEKS TO GO

  • Pick up rings and arrange engraving
  • Final wedding gown fitting
  • Run through bridal hair and makeup
  • Make sure wedding party has arranged fittings
  • Finalize catering for rehearsal dinner if needed
  • Finalize song lists
  • Draw up seating plan for ceremony and reception
  • Finalize plans with all wedding vendors
  • Create wedding day timeline for vendors, wedding party and helpers
  • Write and order programs for ceremony
  • Create plan for cleanup
  • Attend bridal shower

 

4-2 WEEKS TO GO

  • Final gown alteration appointment – bring your maid of honor so she learns how to secure it
  • Write vows, if desired; write toasts
  • Ask those who you would like to speak at your wedding to prepare a speech
  • Review guest list and finalize count with caterer
  • Finalize seating arrangements
  • Make list of personal and emergency items to bring
  • Plan for food and drinks in dressing area

 

THE DAY BEFORE

  • Give schedule to those needed for photos (family and wedding party)
  • Double-check you have all your personal items, have backups; put the bag in competent hands
  • Finalize tips and ensure any outstanding vendor payments are ready

 

ON THE BIG DAY

  • Give groom’s wedding band to maid of honor and bride’s ring to best man
  • Give yourself extra time to get dressed
  • Be sure to make the rounds of your guests and thank them for sharing your day
